How to get from Milan to Rome and from Rome to Milan

There are several ways to get from Rome to Milan. If we talk only about the most popular of them, then this is an airplane, train, bus and rented car. Each method has its own nuances, amenities and budget. Where possible, we will provide links to additional services that will help to reduce the cost or ease the trip. When traveling between Rome and Milan, we at BlogoItaliano most often prefer the train. Therefore, it is with him that we begin.

From Rome to Milan by train

A few years ago, the duration of the trip from Milan to Rome by train was 5-6 hours. However, the improvement of railway connections in Italy reduced the trip time by almost 2 times, making it possible to get from Milan to Rome and cover almost 600 km in just 3 hours.

High-speed trains leave from the main train station Milano Centrale almost every hour between 6 a.m. and 8.20 p.m., arriving in the Italian capital at the central station Roma Termini.

There are stops in Bologna and Florence along the way, but there is no need to get off or change the train before arriving in Rome.Buy fast train tickets Milan-Rome (Rome-Milan) It is possible both through the Internet and through the ticket office at the station.

Fast trains run from Rome to Milan in a few hours

For those who had experience buying at an Italian railway station in high season, the first option may seem much more convenient, since it avoids long lines and talking with staff who do not always speak English.

In addition, the pricing of railways in Italy is such that the closer the date of the trip, the more expensive the ticket. Thus, tickets purchased at the station on the day of departure are usually the most expensive.

Finally, you need to consider that the Rome-Milan route is considered one of the most popular in Italy. As a result, on the day of departure, tickets for some flights are quitecan be sold out entirely.

Even more often there are situations when all tickets are sold out in economy class and, in order to leave, you have to take a more expensive one. And such an allowance - taking into account the distance and the base price of the ticket - can be quite substantial. In more detail about it - in our video below:

Tickets for the Milan-Rome fast train can be bought through the Omio.ru online service, and they will cost from 65 Euro per person for traveling in the first class and from 40 Euro for the second, respectively (2019).

In order to purchase a ticket, you will need a bank card, and the travel document itself will be sent to e-mail in the form of a PDF file immediately after purchase. The whole purchase process rarely takes more than 15 minutes.

And few people know that by purchasing Milan-Rome tickets with Omio, you can save up to 20-25% of their regular price. To do this, you need to register in the service by a special invitation link, and you will receive a discount of 10 Euro for your first purchase in excess of 40 Euro.

In detail, BlogoItaliano described this method in a separate article How to get a 10 Euro discount on trains in Italy in 5 minutes.

Italy Main Station - Roma Termini

Regardless of whether you buy a ticket online or at the ticket office at the station, in Italy it always makes sense to clarify whether an additional reservation is needed on the train. If your ticket contains a carriage and a seat on the train, then an additional reservation is not required.

By the way, one of the important advantages of Omio.ru is that all costs associated with buying a ticketon fast trainsare already included in its price. That is, at the station itself you alreadyno need to bother with a reservation or composting tickets. It remains only to take the train and go on a trip.

Important: if you buy a ticket for a Regionale class train, then, regardless of the place of purchase, you may need to reserve a seat or compost the ticket.

From Milan to Rome by plane

As we noted above, both cities have the largest airports in Italy - Malpensa in Milan and Fiumicino in Rome. This, in turn, means that it is likely to find flights from both Milan to Rome and Rome to Milan at a fairly “tasty” price.

The flight from Milan to Rome usually takes an hour and a half, depending on which airport you use and which plane you fly. For reference, the cost of a flight by EasyJet airline starts from 25 Euros and takes about 75 minutes. At the same time, a similar flight, but Alitalia aircraft costs, as a rule, from 50-60 Euros one way.

Ryan Air flies from the airport to Bergamo

You can also fly from Milan to Rome and Ryanair, where from time to time you can find tickets even for 20 Euro one way. The latter flies from Orio al Serio (Bergamo) airport to Rome Ciampino airport.

Despite the apparent convenience, there are some nuances. The first of them - airports are located outside cities. This means that you will need to separately invest in trips to them, which are not as cheap as we would like. To find out the details in each individual case, we recommend our Milan posts: how to get from Malpensa airport to the city center and How to get to Rome from Fiumicino airport.

The second nuance is that the "tasty" price applies, as a rule, to tickets purchased in advance. If you are planning a trip in the coming weeks, and especially in the summer, then find cheap flights Rome-Rome-Rome it will not be so easy.

The third point is related to the duration of the trip. Given the need for travel between cities and airports, as well as pre-flight formalities, it risks being longer than the train journey described earlier.

If you decide to check everything yourself, then we recommend using the Aviasales service, which, in our opinion, is the best Russian-language service for searching for airline tickets. You can search by filling out the fields in the form below:

As for low-cost airlines, the latter are far from always reflected in the search engines for air tickets, and to find out the cost of a flight with them, you should visit the websites of the airlines.

From Milan to Rome by car

Although traveling around Italy by car looks like a very attractive idea, it is better to drive it away from you when traveling through major cities. Traffic in Italian cities is not happy, the cost of fuel bites, and finding a parking place is very difficult. But if you dissuade from renting a car in Italy - it is an ungrateful business, then it is better to offer something useful that can greatly facilitate the planning of your trip.

Smart - a car very popular among Italians

A very useful online service that you should take note of when planning your road trips in Italy is Rentalcars. This is a specialized metasearch engine for the best prices at car rental companies. Since there are many such companies in Italy, and their prices are often very different, Rentalcars keeps track of all the changes and allows you to find the best deals from various operators at any given time.

In addition, it allows you to not only compare many offers within one site, but also immediately book your favorite car. You can try out the search engine on this page.

Another useful service for car enthusiasts is Michelin. All you need is to drive in the start and end points of the trip, and he will supply you with all the necessary information for planning an auto tour.

So, the service offers two possible routes for a trip from Milan to Rome by car and estimates costs in the amount of about 89 euros. Of these, about 42 Euros will have to be spent on tolls on the autobahns and another 48 on fuel. The latter, however, substantially depends on the car you choose.

The service estimates the distance between cities at 580 km, and the time spent on the trip is 6.5-7 hours. In addition to this information, it also offers a detailed map, weather forecasts for the selected route, information about traffic, gas stations, parking lots, road works, etc.

From Milan to Rome by bus

Another effective way to get from Milan to Rome is to use the bus. More than 10 flights are carried out daily between cities. The stations from which buses leave for Milan are Lampugnano and San Donato. The main stop in Rome is Tiburtina.

The cost of the bus is comparable to the price of a very slow train, but this option has one significant drawback - travel time. Even the fastest flights require about 8 hours to cover the distance between Rome and Milan, and this can not be compared with fast trains.

Is it worth 10 euros to save a lost day and impressions of one of the most modern railways in the world - you decide. But you can check the current bus schedule and ticket prices on this page.
